Here are some things you can do to support

Odd Nerdrum

By support of Odd Nerdrum I mean that in the case of the State of Norway vs. the Painter Odd Nerdrum we believe that various circumstances led to an unjust sentence and that more attention be given to THE NERDRUM AFFAIR, and further more that it should be dismissed on grounds of the arguements which are laid out here for you to discover and share.

This is how you can help Odd Nerdrum and we thank you for your assistance in helping create awareness so that this man may maintain his liberty and continue his work, which is much more than a national treasure.  His paintings are a gift to the world.

Your help is both needed and appreciated!

It is important to get this information out quickly, for Nerdrums appeal in the case will appear suddenly if it appears at all and we need to be ready to show the prosecution just how big and wide spread Nerdrums gift to the world is.

There is currently an article in AMERICAN ARTIST MAGAZINE called THE NERDRUM AFFAIR.  Read it and please guide people to it.  This will give everyone an initial introduction to the very serious situation. There is more to it and I encourage you to read on.

GUIDE PEOPLE to freeoddnerdrum.org, which is operated by Odds two sons, Øde and Bork.  There you will find important information and links to other related statements and evidence. We will continue to translate the information from Noweigan to make this story  more understandable and more interesting for more individuals.

Keep checking back to get all the twists in this true life drama that is unfolding NOW.  No matter how you look at it, there are interesting questions around Nerdrums harsh sentence.  His dedication to figurative painitng as well as his current stand for, not only his own rights but the rights of the free thinking, creative individuals in the western world.  This is not happening in China, it is in a free democracy in the western world.

Check back here and drop by and share some links for  a while each day.  You will find a standard letter below that you may copy and use to make easier.

Purpose:

with contributions by Nelson Shanks, Joakim Ericsson, Richard Thomas Scott, Daniel Graves, Alexey Steele and Brandon Kralik

Below you will find 2 samples letters you may use or use as models for your own posts and emailing purposes.  There are two, each for different purposes.

The 1st letter is intended to be sent to media organizations, both locally and nationally and is designed to encourage them to put their machinery to work to further awareness and interest in the Affair.   It is good if these organizations recieve many multiple requests from multiple directions.

The 2nd letter is one that can be used as as model for the emails that you send to your friends and the individuals that you select and encourage to support Odd Nerdrum.

It’s simple.

  1. 1.share the information intuitively.

2. interest others in helping us spread and share support for Odd Nerdrum.

Be creative.  This is intended as a guide but you must take your own initiative on behalf of something that you feel is important.  It is best to stick to the facts as you see them.  Ask questions.  That is a great way to start dialogue and gain knowedge.

Farther down the page we will give you some ideas about who needs to see this information the most.  There is a list of media organizations, museums,  and institurions that may need to hear more than once from any  one of us.  They need to KNOW that we support Nerdrum, and why they should too.   We want to add the names of supporters to the list, with quotes when possible (ask for them) so, as you recieve them, send them to us and we will post them here and on freeoddnerdrum.org

nerdrum.bork@gmail.com

Copy and paste the links and or images to use in the spreading of information.  SHARE THE INFO OFTEN with many

In addition to sharing it can be beneficial to tag interested people and groups and feel free to tag yourself to expidite this process. Ask people to tag themselves and send emails themselves.  This is how you can help.   Ask your local media to report on aspects of an extremely interesting story that is happening now!

This is important, not just for Nerdrum, but potentially to our own liberty.  Nerdrum stands for the right of the talented,  creative individual.

Be sure and make reference to “THE NERDRUM AFFAIR” by Allison Malafronte and which is NOW in AMERICAN ARTIST MAGAZINE, Feb/Mar. 2012 nationwide and beyond.

TEXT to accompany the above pictures.

1st sample letter for media sources

You may use whole or in part as you see fit to contact media organizations and encourage them to support Nerdrum and those of us who suspect his innocence.  There are some parts of this you will want to personalize and which I have highlited in a lighter grey for you.

A letter on behalf of Odd Nerdrum,

The Nerdrum Affair is one deserving of attention.  It is in fact one of paramount importance.  We think you will agree, as many of us do, that there is reason to question the harshness of the prison sentence of 2 years in prison for the Painter Odd Nerdrum, without the right to paint.

We wish to make the Art community, the population in general and the Norweigan State aware that many people believe that Nerdrum, Europes first art political prisoner,  that his  claim of innocence deserves to be heard and his liberty restored.

I  ask you to learn and share some of the facts of this case, this moist drama, with your many contacts by reporting it.

Nerdrum continues to claim his innocence against accusations of Tax Fraud.

Nerdrum contends that he is innocent of the charges laid against him.  That the court imposed harsh sentence against him without substantial facts, by providing false evidence and  not accepting key evidence in his defense.  He has filed for an appeal but it is not likely he will receive one as most tax cases in Norway are not allowed to be appealed.   In addition this harsh sentence came at at a time when the entire nation was in mourning and this possibly swayed the ruling.

The facts as they are seen by Nerdrums defense are that he has paid his taxes for the years and amounts in question and that sums which the court maintains are income were not, but rather expenses and  that and a contract which might have supported Nerdrums explanation was not allowed to be considered at the trial.

Much attention has been given to the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, who is accused of similar charges and in, nearly the exact same amount as Nerdrum which is an interesting coincidence, if it is that.   With the help of supporters Weiwei was able to gather enough international support, over 150,000 signitures and major public announcements of support from museums like the Guggenheim and the International Museum council,  including a public statement of support for Weiwei from the Norwegian Foreign minister, just days before Nerdrums trial in which Jonas Gahr Støre asks the Chinese state to come forth with proof of t

Both Artists maintain their innocence and in both cases there is questionable proof from the authorities.  Given the similarities between the case of Weiwei and Nerdrum, the Nerdrum case is just as, if not more important because it is happening in a free democratic nation where proof of guilt should be presented beyond reason of doubt.  Many people harbor doubts regarding the harsh sentencing of Nerdrum.

The importance of Nerdrums work is well appreciated and understood as the many books and articles about him attest to.  His work is in the collections of notable museums like the Met in New York, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Frye Museum in Seattle and Hirshorn Museum in Washington D.C., as well as in many private collections and other public institutions around the world.  He is arguably the worlds greatest Painter now living.

“Now is the time for me to say that I consider you the greatest painter living and am proud to have you as my friend.”

-Quote from Andrew Wyeth in a private letter to Odd Nerdrum, Mar. 3, 2003

“The work of Odd Nerdrum is a gift to the world much in need of culture.  To in any way inhibit or prevent his work is a crime against humanity and should be condemned.  No court is above this reproach.”

-Nelson Shanks, professional portraitist and Studio Incamminati founder.  Taken from “THE NERDRUM AFFAIR” by Allison Malafronte and which appears in the Feb/Mar 2012 issue of American Artist magazine.

TEXT of the petition to free Odd Nerdrum:

We the people, we the artists, are in unity against the unfair treatment of the artist, Odd Nerdrum by the Norwegian Government for Tax evasion. Odd Nerdrum is an International treasure, some even say a savior of the art world. He is a man of integrity and a stand against what many see as the essential emptiness of modern art and life. Too put a man of his age away in a prison cell for some dubious tax claims is unjust and unfair and a crime in itself. Odd Nerdrum is more than an artist, he is a symbol of pure individualism and that, in itself, is the highest hope for art and man. To put such a symbol away into some jail is a shame to humanity and a shame to art and a shame to Norway as a country. People commit serious violent crimes every day in the world and receive lighter or no sentences. As a whole, we the people stand united in defense of this international treasure and genius and we pray that he is treated with justice. To mistreat this man is to mistreat the soul of your own country and the soul of every artist and human.
